Over the past decade, the sport of "extreme pogo" has steadily gained notoriety and is becoming more and more established as an extreme sport that is both serious and highly entertaining.
Approximately 10 years ago, Dave Armstrong set up a small website dedicated to the sport of extreme pogo. Soon this grew into a small web-based community of a handful of pogoers scattered about the country sharing ideas, photos, and videos of pogo stick tricks. As the community grew the site became xpogo.com, and as the tricks became more extreme companies began creating the next generation of pogo sticks that could handle these tricks, and propel riders much higher into the air.
S.B.I., the company that invented the pogo stick in 1918, went into the business of manufacturing extreme pogo sticks, releasing the Flybar in 2004. Soon, two other companies emerged with their own extreme pogo sticks. Vurtego created a lighter stick that runs on air, while Motostick came out with a heavy duty steel spring design. Now, there is a competitive market in the extreme pogo industry, with each company continually trying to put out the best extreme pogo stick.
Accordingly, the number of extreme pogo athletes has greatly increased over the last several years. Jumpers have learned to execute truly astonishing tricks on various sticks, clearing heights of over 8 feet.
Extreme pogo has gained a lot of media attention over the past 2-3 years, with extreme pogo athletes being featured on such national shows as:
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
America's Got Talent
The Late Show with David Letterman
The Today Show
VH1
The Ellen DeGeneres Show
The Gong Show
The History Channel
...and others
